Ability to smell food while eating diminishes with age

AIMAN INAM   NEW YORK:  Researchers, in a novel study here has noted that the ability to pick up aroma by means of nose and mouth while chomping food declines with age. Scientists involved in the research maintained that this might be because of the protracted consumption of medicines or physical and psychological changes connected with adult age. Additionally, the study also held that usage of dentures can also drastically influence the capability to pick-up aromas. Tyler Flaherty from Oregon State University said: “Generally, large individual differences in odor responsiveness become even greater when ageing is considered as a factor.” The researchers analyzed around 102 healthy contestants aged between 18 and 72 for the study. The findings were published in the journal Chemosensory Perception.
